In response to a world marked by isolation and division, Saint Columba Presbyterian Church is launching a bold and compassionate vision: the ’’Karibu Centre’’ — a place where Christian love will take tangible form in everyday life.

Rooted in prayer and community effort, Karibu was born from the dream of creating a welcoming hub on the church grounds in Phoenix. It began with the Ruby Sisters, a group of dedicated women who envisioned transforming the old rectory into a space of warmth and mission. That vision is now becoming reality through the planned café, library, garden, events, and acts of solidarity.

What will Karibu be?

Karibu will be more than just a centre — it will be a living expression of faith. It will seek to serve ’’body, mind, and spirit’’ through six interconnected pillars:

The Café

A peaceful and vibrant meeting place, the ’’Karibu Kafé’’ will welcome students, families, and neighbours for affordable, quality refreshments in a relaxed setting. Volunteers and community members will help bring life to this space and its mission of gentle outreach.

The Library

A community library will offer both Christian and general-interest books, e-readers, and quiet reading spaces. It will support education and reflection, especially for those with limited access to literature.

Solidarity

Workshops, support groups, and outreach activities will foster social connection and mutual support. From youth tutoring and senior clubs to yard sales and skill-sharing sessions, Karibu will promote dignity and empowerment for all.

Spiritual Renewal

Karibu will also nurture the soul. Through Bible workshops, prayer spaces, and pastoral care, it will offer spiritual companionship for those seeking meaning, healing, and God’s peace.

The Garden

A green oasis in the heart of Phoenix, the garden will invite visitors to rest, reflect, or join in gardening projects. It will support sustainability and serve as an outdoor classroom and playground for all ages.

Events

Karibu will host gatherings that bring the community together: open mics, art shows, themed nights, and more. It will also be a flexible space for church activities, family celebrations, and workshops.

A Church Without Walls

Karibu will be a ministry of Saint Columba, but open to all. It will reflect our commitment to ’’“do Church differently”’’ — not only on Sundays, but throughout the week, through presence, service, and shared life.

Volunteers, professionals, and visitors alike will be invited to make Karibu a place of encounter, transformation, and joy.

“We love because He first loved us.” (1 John 4:19)
